  • Iván López Montero

I completed my B.Sc. in Condensed Matter Physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) in 2001. Supervised by Prof Philippe F. Devaux at Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique (CNRS) and Marisela Vélez (UAM); my PhD thesis (2006, Université Paris 7) focused on lipid asymmetry, the flip-flop of ceramides as well as the biological implications of the enzymatic conversion of sphingomyelin into ceramide. Then I joined the group of Prof. Francisco Monroy at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) as a Juan de la Cierva fellow.
My research efforts focused onthe mechanics of model lipid membranes, with the long-term goal being to infer the mechanical role of lipid membranes in different biological processes such as apoptosis and bacterial cell division.
In 2013, I was awarded with an ERC Strating Grant from the European Research Council to go deep into the fabrication of membrane-based bioinspired artificial systems able to interact with cultured cells, with the final goal to improve the treatments currently available for mitochondrial diseases. I have been a Ramón y Cajal researcher at UCM from 2014 until October 2017, when I became an Associate Proffesor. I lead the Mitochondrial Membranes Laboratory since 2014.

I started my studies as Biologist in 1993 at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG) in Groningen (The Netherlands) and completed Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biology with the specialization in Molecular Biology at the RUG in August 1999. After graduation, I started my PhD-thesis in September 1999 to study the structural and functional properties of the Escherichia coli ATPase SecA by tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy at the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the RUG under the supervision of Prof. Dr. A. Driessen and Dr. C. van der Does. In March 2006, I joined as a Post-Doc the group of Prof. Dr. M. Vicente at the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CNB-CSIC Madrid, Spain), where my research activity as a molecular microbiologist focused on the reconstruction of essential cellular processes in bacteria to understand their detailed molecular mechanism. In September 2015, I joined as a Post-Doc the group of Dr. Ivan Lopez Montero at the Complutense Univerisity in Madrid (UCM) where I develop my research activity currently. My research activity focuses on the production, purification and the reconstruction ATP synthase from different origins within model membranes to produce ATP inside the lipid vesicles.

I obtained my Degree in Chemistry in 2008 at the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM). In 2009 I started my PhD to study the DNA lipofection with colloidal nanovectors under the supervision of Profs. Emilio Aicart and Elena Junquera, from the department of Physical Chemistry at UCM. I obtained my PhD the 28th February of 2013 with the qualification of Sobresaliente Cum Laude obtaining the PhD Extraordinary Award. During 2014, I worked on the synthesis and characterization of lipidic nanoparticles with paramagnetic complexes of Gd(III) and Mn(II) at the Università degli studi Piemonte Orientale “Amedeo Avogadro” (Alessandria, Italy). In 2015 I moved to the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) to work in the development of new therapies for the treatment of congenital metabolic rare diseases in the Nanomol group. Awarded with a reintegration program “Sara Borrell” from the Spanish Institute of Health I joined the group of Dr. Ivan Lopez Montero at Hospital 12 de Octubre to apply gene therapy against mitochondrial diseases. Nowadays, I am working in the laboratory of Dr. Iván López Montero as Assistant Personal to the Investigation at UCM to study about new therapies against pulmonary cancer. Finally, I have been awarded with the Eduardo Gallego Fellowship to start as principal investigator of my own biomedical project about new colloidal nanocarriers against mitochondrial diseases which I will carry out in the Mitochondrial Membrane Laboratory of Dr. Iván López Montero (Nov 2019 – Dec 2020).

I obtained my Bachelor degree in Chemical Sciences at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2010. Among 2011 and 2015 I was hired in the department of Physical Chemistry at Universidad de Castilla‑La Mancha (Ciudad Real), where in 2012 I received a Master’s degree in Research in Chemistry and in 2016 obtained his PhD in Chemistry. During my predoctoral training, I spent a month at the Institut de Combustion Aérothermique Réactivité et Environnement (Orléans, France) and three months at the Institut de Physique de Rennes-Départment de Physique Moléculaire (Rennes, France). In addition, I have published 8 scientific articles and I have presented 16 contributions in national and international conferences. Currently, I works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Physical Chemistry department at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
